Hidden on the upper floors of a rather quiet & rundown Centrepoint Bandar Utama is a Thai restaurant called Baan Kun Ya. Its interior takes on a modern, cosy style although the menu stays true to classic Thai cuisine that you can typically fine in a Thai restaurant.
One glance at the menu tells you all that the prices do not come cheap, with each dish averagely at RM20+. It was their 50% promotion that lured WL & I to try it out. We picked 4 dishes, which should be enough to fill up our dinner appetite.
The dishes came & it was disappointingly small, though we shouldn't be surprised small portions are part & parcel of Thai dining experience. But the small portion doesn't justify the price paid in RM, unlike the more affordable price range in Bangkok, for example. Also, Baan Kun Ya is understaffed & may not be attentive as expected during peak hours.
Nonetheless, food tasted great albeit slightly leaning towards Malaysian-ised palette. Not that I'm complaining but I would've appreciated something more authentic, especially with the hefty price tag.
Stir-fried water spinach (kangkung)
Pork meat omelette
Crab meat fried rice
Deep-fried chicken with spicy Thai sauce
Worth mentioning is the magic drink that changes colour when lime juice is poured into it. Apparently, the drink is made from blue flower that reacts to the lime juice's acidity & turns into pink. This magic drink is delicious, by the way. =)
Before lime juice is poured - drink is indigo blue
After lime juice is poured - drink is pink
Sadly, we might not drop by for 2nd visit if there won't be a promotion. The food is overpriced based on the portion served. Oh well, Baan Kun Ya is meant to serve an upmarket area at Bandar Utama whereby most patrons, if not all, are willing to pay that range. We'll just have to see...Rating: 4 out of 5.
