Well, well...who wasn't charmed by one of Marvel's underdog Guardians of the Galaxy when it was released? I was mesmerized & thrilled, for sure. The movie was so retro yet cool in a good way. It brought back 80s music to be the new "it".
The characters are quirky yet charming in their own way; someone you love to hate but couldn't. Now Marvel is back with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, can it live up to its predecessor?
This sequel mostly explores the origin story of Peter Quill & who his father is. It is indeed a simple plot & lacks depth; offering no hints connecting to the next Marvel film. Because the plot is stretch so thinly that every plot gap is filled with more jokes & Quill's favourite 80s tracks to complement an impending action scene.
There are a few character additions that are likely to carry through the franchise while a familiar one will leave. One of the stand-outs is Groot in a baby form is the most adorable thing ever. Its pair of large, innocent eyes evoke so much emotion even though its vocabulary is only limited to "I am Groot" in that particular sequence.
Although I still enjoyed this movie for being consistent to the first movie, the exaggerated scripts are starting to get exhausting & repetitive; as if it is running out of gas. Hopefully the next sequel or upcoming Avengers film will contain exciting elements to pique audiences' interest. Otherwise, the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise will just be another one of Disney-Marvel's money making machine incorporating their tried & tested storytelling method. Ranking: 3.9 out of 5.
