Everyone has been raving on social media about Mak's Chee wonton noodle store which just opened at 1 Utama. It serves Hong Kong style wonton noodles that are springy in every strand. The news must have spread real fast because there's always a long queue waiting to be seated.
We were curious & decided to join along the crowd already lining up at the entrance. Even more intriguing, the restaurant was operating at half capacity that day. Meaning probably longer than usual waiting period.
We waited for approx 15 minutes & finally was ushered into the restaurant. One glance at their menu shows their food doesn't come cheap. We picked 4 dishes to try out. Two of the orders are their signature dishes - dry & soup noodles.
As soon as the waitress served the noodles, we were in utter shocked. For an RM11+ noodles, I would at least expected it to be nicely plated with some decent garnishing. But the appearance was appalling.
A bite on several noodle strands left us even more disappointed. Although the noodles were handmade with quality ingredients, the chefs must have cooked it a little too long, killing off the springy texture. The noodles turned out to be soggy. What a hot mess!
Prawn dumplings came next - both dried & soup. And the two dumplings didn't seem too bad. A good amount of minced meat stuffed inside the dumpling skin. But each dish has only 5 pieces, no doubt a pricey dish.
When the bill came, it cost us RM62.60! It was exorbitant for these type of food which are nowhere at gourmet level. It's the kind of food that we normally eat at hawker stalls. While it may be unfair to compare the same food sold at hot, sweaty hawker stalls & an air-conditioned restaurant in a mall, I personally think feel the perceived value of wonton noodles & dumplings are not that high.
In short, the meal wasn't worth it. I don't think I'll ever return for future visits. Makes me wonder how long Mak's Chee will last. Rating: 3 out of 5.
